Shopping Problems
Under Review
The Shopping Problems exercise set provides students with a variety of word problems to be solved.
Use the editor to identify items that can bought, and to set a suitable price range. Use the editor to customize the worksheets to use your students names, or names that are appropriate for your city, state or country.
Change the number of exercises

Click on the box labeled "Number of Exercises" in the options panel.

Type in a new number or use the up and down arrows to change the value. You can choose any number from 1 to 200.
Change the number of exercises in a row

Select "Exercises per Row" in the options panel.

Click the down arrow to choose a new number from the list or use Auto.
Notes:

If you are using the default auto settings, the number of questions per row will change automatically when you adjust the font size or the low/high number ranges.

For word problems exercises sets, you can only choose 1 or 2 exercises per row.
Change the row spacing
Set the spacing between rows of exercises in 100ths of an inch (25 = 1/4 inch, 40 = 1cm).

Select the input field for the Row Spacing option in the options pane.

Type a new value in the field or use the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the value. Valid range is 0 to 300.
Show title

To show the exercise set Title, select the check box for the Show Title option in the options pane.

To hide the exercise set title, deselect the check box.
Show instructions

To show the exercise set Instructions, select the check box for the Show Instructions option in the options pane.

To hide the exercise set instructions, deselect the check box.
Show the answer bank

To show the answer bank, select the check box for the Show Answer Bank option in the options pane.

To hide the answer bank, deselect the check box.
Show duplicate warning
When this option is selected, a warning is displayed if there are any duplicate exercises in the exercise set. To hide the duplicate warning, uncheck the Show Duplicate Warning option in the options pane.
Select the active problem templates

To select the active problem templates, select the Select Problems option in the options pane and press the ellipsis button.

Select the desired templates, then click OK to close the problems window and apply the selections.
Edit the shopping items

To edit the shopping items, press the ellipsis button beside the Edit Shopping Items option in the options pane.

In the editor, add, edit or select shopping items, then click OK to close the editor and apply the selections.
Edit the shoppers

To edit the shoppers, press the ellipsis button beside the Edit Problem Names option in the options pane.

In the editor, select, edit and create new shoppers.
Tip
Problem Names are shared between exercise sets that use names in the word problems. When you add names to a list in the Problem Names editor, those names will be available from that list for any word problems that uses names.
Round pricing
To round pricing for the shopping items, select one of the choices for the Round Prices To option in the options pane.
Tip
Select 1.00 if you want prices to have no cents - $10.00, $5.00. Select 0.25 for prices that end in no cents, or .25 or .50 or .75 - $2.50, $12.75.
Set the sales tax
For those questions that have sales tax as part of the problem, enter a tax rate that will be used. To set the sales tax percentage, select the input field for the Sales Tax option in the options pane and enter a new value. Valid range is 1.0 to 99.0.
Note
If you do not want questions that use sales tax, use Select Problems in the options pane, and uncheck any problem template that uses sales tax.
Set a discount
For those questions that have a discount as part of the problem, enter a rate that will be used. To set the discount percentage, select the input field for the Discount option in the options pane and enter a new value. Valid range is 1.0 to 99.0.
Note
If you do not want questions that use discounts, use Select Problems in the options pane, and uncheck any problem template that uses discounts.
Adjust the number of Items used
Make the questions easier or harder by adjusting the number of different items that can be used in each problem. For Number of Items in the options pane, enter a value for both the High and Low ranges. Valid values are 1 to 5.
Item Quantity
Make the questions easier or harder by adjusting the quantity of each item that can be used in the word problems. For Item Quantity in the options pane, enter a value for both the High and Low ranges. Valid values are 1 to 6.
